Hartwick Pines Snowshoeing

Guided Snowshoe Hikes
We (Hartwick Pines S. P.) will be offering four guided snowshoe hikes
on four Saturdays (Jan.
19, Feb. 2&16, March 1) again this Winter. These snowshoe hikes begin at
the Visitor Center at 1pm with a short program in the auditorium and
make an approximately 1 mile hike to the Logging Museum where there will
be a campfire and hot cider. Learn about snowshoeing throughout
history, the winter wildlife at Hartwick Pines and how the loggers
worked in the winter. This is geared to beginners and we have snowshoes
for those who do not have their own pair. This is a free program, but
reservations are required, as there is a 20 person limit. A motor
vehicle permit is required for entry. Call (989) 348-2537 or email

Preparing for Bicycle Outing

This page can also be accessed from the home page by clicking on "Resources" and then clicking on "troop forms."

If you wish, you may go to this site and download a copy for yourself of whatever forms will help you to accomplish the responsibilities you have in the troop, particularly in regard to the upcoming "Hart/Montague Linear Trail & Camp Owasippe" aka "The Bicycle Outing" outing. In particular, the PLC would want to have a copy of the PLC Outdoor Program Checklist, the Patrol Duty Roster, the Program form, and the Patrol Menu form. Everyone will want to have a copy of the Checklists they need to pack gear.

The PLC made plans last night for the following upcoming activities:

April 3 Troop Meeting (Court of Honor postponed). We will be preparing for the Bicycle outing and the Court of Honor.

April 10 Court of Honor. Parents: please plan to attend. This evening will wrap up the Spring Popcorn Sale.

April 17 Troop Meeting. We will be preparing for the Pushcart Derby and collecting permission slips and money for the Bicycle outing. We will also have a "shakedown" for the Bicycle outing. Boys will need to bring their equipment, including bicycles and helmets.

April 21 We will be meeting at the Welch's at 2:30 to build the pushcart.

April 24 PLC Meeting. We will be planning for the Pushcart event, the Bottle Drive and the meetings in May, as well as beginning to plan troop events at Northwoods.

April 27-29 Bicycle outing, camping at Camp Owasippe in Blue Lake Township.

Finally, you will want to add Scout Day at Spartan Speedway on Friday, May 11 to your calendars. Details concerning leaders, cost and time will be coming.

The following Tuesday, August 22, 2006 is the fourth Tuesday in
August, on which we have our regularly scheduled monthly Patrol

is scheduled for Saturday, September 9, approximately two and
one-half weeks after this PLC meeting.

I hope that all of our families will be able to come out for this
picnic. At this picnic, we plan to celebrate, in particular, the
accomplishments of our troop at Northwoods Summer Resident Camp 2006
in early July. Further details about this picnic will be provided as
soon as possible.

The following Tuesday, August 29, 2006 is the fifth Tuesday in
August. There is no meeting scheduled for that Tuesday.

Dear Scouts,

As I mentioned in my previous email, there are other troop junior leadership positions, besides the positions of Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader. The positions of Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader are the only troop junior leadership positions which are elected. All other troop junior leadership positions are appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader in consultation with the Scoutmaster.

One very important troop junior leadership position is the position of troop scribe:

According to the programs and policies of the Boy Scouts of America, Boy Scout troops are "boy-led". The primary vehicle for this junior leadership is the Patrol Leaders Council:

"Junior leaders make up the patrol leaders council - the board of directors, so to speak. It's the decision-making team. The patrol leaders' council plans the annual program, then the weekly meetings leading up to the monthly outdoor adventure."

The success of our troop program, which is planned by the Patrol Leaders Council, depends upon the PLC having accurate information about the present state of the troop. This information helps the PLC plan activities which will enable the troop, the patrols in the troop, and all the Scouts in these patrols to make progress in realizing the objective of Scouting, to help young boys grow into responsible men, through Scouting, "a game with a purpose".

Much of this information is kept by the troop scribe:

* Attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders' council meetings

* Records individual Scout attendance and dues payments

* Records individual Scout advancement progress

In order to keep a log of PLC meetings, the troop scribe is required to attend PLC meetings, even though he is not a voting member of the PLC.

If you would like to serve your troop in this important position of troop scribe, please speak to your Senior Patrol Leader about your interest in this position. He will talk with me about appointing you to this position. If we decide together to appoint you to this position, he will inform you of your appointment to this position, at which point your responsibilities to fulfill the obligations of this position will begin.

In order to serve effectively in this position, in addition to being a scout who is a good example to his fellow scouts, you should be able to take careful notes of the discussion at PLC meetings, so that our troop will have an accurate record of the important decisions which are made by the PLC at these meetings, and keep careful records of our scouts involvement in our troop, so that the PLC can make well-informed decisions at these meetings.

Troop 272 will not provide transportation to this event. Participants in this event from our troop will just meet at Suite S13 at Oldsmobile Park.

There are 8 tickets left to reserve for this event for the following persons:

- the remaining 5 Scouts in our troop: Taylor Bishop, Jacob Butler, Henry Pacheco, Nate Truelove, and Aaron Walsh

- one parent of each of 3 of these remaining 5 Scouts

Since there are still 5 Scouts in our troop who have not reserved a ticket, but only 8 tickets left to reserve, there are not enough tickets left to reserve for all 5 of these Scouts and one parent of each of these 5 Scouts. All 5 of these Scouts could still go to this event, provided 2 of the remaining 5 Scouts could go to this event with one of the other adults from our troop attending this event. Troop 272 will not handle such arrangements, but will leave them up to the Scouts and their families.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you wish to attend this event, so that a final decision regarding the distribution of these 20 tickets can be made as soon as possible. If not earlier, a final decision regarding the distribution of these 20 tickets will be made at the Patrol Leaders Council Meeting next Tuesday evening, July 25.

I will get back to everyone concerning this final decision once it has been made and will, at this time, provide further details about obtaining any tickets which you have reserved for this event.

Northwoods Summer Resident Camp 2006

camp at the Iroquois campsite at Northwoods Scout Reservation on the
fourth week of the Northwoods Summer Resident Camp 2006, from Sunday,

Tentative Calendar posted earlier this year. I have just edited this
online Tentative Calendar to show the change which was made in the
schedule for Troop 272 to attend Northwoods Summer Resident Camp 2006:

This Evening's Troop Meeting - March 21, 2006

Hello, Troop 272,

I hope that all is going well with everyone.

This evening's troop meeting is a very busy meeting.

Unless some of the following has already been taken care of, all of the following needs to be taken care of at this evening's troop meeting:

(1) Collect $75.00 per Scout from each Scout who is planning to attend Northwoods Summer Resident Camp. We need to do this so that we can meet the deadline for paying this portion of summer camp fees to the Chief Okemos Council.

(2) Get T-shirt size from each Scout who is planning to attend Northwoods Summer Resident Camp. T-shirts for summer camp are included in the fees for summer camp. But we need to get the sizes to the Chief Okemos Council so that they can order the correct sizes for us in time for summer camp.

(3) Collect Merit Badge choices from each Scout who is planning to attend Northwoods Summer Resident Camp. We need to do this so that we can submit our choices in a timely fashion to help ensure that each of our Scouts will get into the merit badge classes he wishes to take at this camp.

(4) Pass out permission slips for Nate's Lot/Eaton Rapids Rifle Range outing. I hope that all is going well with the preparation for this outing. We did an outing like this with my old troop a few years ago. It was really fun.

(5)Distribute flyers for the Scouting for Food Drive 2006 in the neighborhood

North of Holt Road, west of Washington Avenue, and south of Willoughby Road. Most of our Scouts should be familiar with this area since they either live there or have participated in service projects and/or fundraisers there.

Remember the Scout Motto: Be Prepared.

And don't forget the Scout Slogan: Do a Good Turn Daily.

two-deep leadership for outings

The Boy Scouts of America have a number of requirements for adult leadership for troop activities.

One of these requirements is known as "two-deep leadership":

Two-deep leadership:

Two registered adult leaders, or one registered adult and a parent of a participating Scout, one of whom must be at least 21 years of age or older, are required for all trips or outings. There are a few instances, such as patrol activities, when no adult leadership is required. Coed overnight activities require male and female adult leaders, both of whom must be 21 years of age or older, and one of whom must be a registered member of the BSA.

In order to properly plan for our troop's activities throughout the year, we need to have a commitment of two adult leaders for each one of our troop's activities, to satisfy this "two-deep leadership" requirement.

Since one of these two adult leaders is required to be registered with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), it would be helpful if we had a few adults from our troop, parents of Scouts or other interested adults, registered as adult leaders in our troop. That way we could call upon a larger pool of candidates to satisfy this part of the two-deep leadership requirement. This makes it more likely that we won't have to cancel an outing due to unavoidable scheduling conflicts.

I have provided half of the two-deep leadership requirement for many of our troop outings in the past. As I am going abroad for the months of March, April, May, June, and July, I will not be able to do this until August. Hence, our troop's need for volunteers for two-deep leadership has increased for the next few months.

Northwoods Summer Resident Camp

The most difficult of these outings for which to provide two-deep leadership is the week-long summer resident camp at Northwoods Scout Reservation in Lupton, MI.

If we need to share "two-deep leadership" among more than two adults, who may each cover only part of the duration of an activity, but who, by sharing the load, provide two-deep leadership at all times during the activity, then such an arrangement should certainly be considered.

As they say, "outing" is three quarters of "scouting". I understand that all of us have very busy lives. But I hope that "two-deep leadership" will not be an obstacle to providing a vibrant program of outings for our Scouts. When a Scout is elected or appointed, as the case may be, to any of the following positions of troop responsibility in a troop, then he becomes a member of that troop's Patrol Leaders Council.

* Venture Patrol Leader

Being a member of a troop's Patrol Leaders Council entails additional responsibilities, including attendance at Patrol Leaders Council Meetings and Troop Program Planning Conferences.

The Troop Scribe, although not a member of the Patrol Leaders Council. also attends Patrol Leaders Council Meetings and Troop Program Planning Conferences, in order to take minutes of these meetings, even though he doesn't vote at these meetings.

Junior Leader Positions - Troop and Patrol

Dear Scouts,

If you are interested in serving in a particular position of responsibility in our troop, whether it be a Troop Position of Responsibility or a Patrol Position of Responsibility, you should make sure that you fully understand the responsibilities that are attached to this position of responsibility.

These positions of responsibility for Scouts, known as Junior Leader Positions, in contrast to Adult Leader Positions, positions of responsibility for Scouters, are described in the somewhat outdated "Junior Leader Handbook" and its successors, the "Senior Patrol Leader Handbook" and the "Patrol Leader Handbook". The latter two handbooks are kept in the troop cabinet in our meeting room at Olivet Baptist Church.

The brief descriptions of junior leader positions which were published in the Junior Leader Handbook can be found on our troop web site by following the link for "Troop Organization" from the front page of our troop web site:

The positions of Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader are both Troop Positions of Responsibility. Both of these positions are elected positions. The Senior Patrol Leader is elected by a vote of all the Scouts in the troop. Each Patrol Leader is elected by a vote of the Scouts in the patrol which he serves as Patrol Leader. According to the policy of the Boy Scouts of America, during a term of service in either of these positions, a Scout is not a member of any patrol in the troop. Each Patrol Leader represents the patrol which elected him to this position, but he is not a member of that patrol while he serves that patrol as its Patrol Leader. In practice, the Patrol Leader is often thought of as a member of the patrol which he serves. But, technically speaking, he is not a member of that patrol.

All other Troop Positions of Responsibility are appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader with the advice and counsel of the Scoutmaster.

All Patrol Positions of Responsibility in a given patrol are appointed by the Patrol Leader of that patrol with the advice and counsel of the Scoutmaster.

Except for the position of bugler, Troop Positions of Responsibility all fulfill the advancement requirements for Star, Life and Eagle ranks regarding service in positions of troop responsibility. The position of bugler also fulfills these advancement requirements for Star and Life ranks, but not for Eagle rank.

Patrol Positions of Responsibility do not fulfill the advancement requirements for Star, Life and Eagle ranks regarding service in positions of troop responsibility. Remember, Patrol Leader is not a Patrol Position of Responsibility. Rather, it is a Troop Position of Responsibility.

There is a mistake regarding the fees for Northwoods Summer Camp 2006 on the brochure about this camp which was passed out at last week's Court of Honor.

The "Fees & Forms Schedule" on this brochure should have stated the following:

Deposit $75.00 - due March 21, 2006

Final Payment of $140.00 - due May 16, 2006

Final Payment of $150.00 will be required if paid after May 16, 2006

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

Boy Scout policy states that the current requirements for rank advancements and merit badges are those which are published in the latest version of the booklet entitled "Boy Scout Requirements". The latest version of this booklet is the 2006 version.

I have just been informed that the requirements in the Boy Scout Requirements 2006 became effective January 1, 2006.

One particular change which our Scouts should be aware of is the addition of a requirement for First Class rank. This new requirement for First Class is numbered 11 and the old requirements 11 and 12 are renumbered as 12 and 13:

New First Class 11. Tell someone who is eligible to join Boy Scouts, or an inactive Boy Scout, about your troop's activities. Invite him to a troop outing, activity, service project or meeting. Tell him how to join, or encourage the inactive Boy Scout to become active.

New First Class 12. Participate in a Scoutmaster conference.

New First Class 13. Complete your board of review.

A grace period has been given for Scouts who were already working on their Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class rank requirements before January 1, 2006. These Scouts will be able to complete their First Class rank with the old list of requirements provided they do so by June 30, 2006. After this date, these Scouts will have to complete First Class rank under the new list of requirements.

Please note that this means that all of our new Scouts will need to complete the new list of requirements, as they did not begin working on their Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class rank requirements until after January 1, 2006.

Please note that the current list of rank requirements is not necessarily that which you will find in your version of the Boy Scout Handbook. As the BSA continually revises its list of requirements, we need to update our own lists of requirements accordingly.

Both of the above web sites have lists of all the requirements for
each of these merit badge subjects.

Each of these subjects has a merit badge pamphlet containing these
requirements and instructional material which you need to complete
these requirements.

We have merit badge pamphlets for a very limited number of subjects
in our troop library for Scouts to borrow. I believe that our library
only covers about a dozen subjects. And I don't think we have many,
if any, duplicate copies of the pamphlet for any given subject.

(3) Also, during this Court of Honor, we will be presenting an orientation for Scouts and their families to the 2006 Summer Resident Camp at Northwoods Scouting Reservation, the largest of the two campgrounds which belong to the Chief Okemos Council. Among other things, this camp provides a great opportunity for Scouts to make progress on earning the many merit badges which they need to advance to the higher ranks of Scouting, Star, Life, and Eagle. Pack 640's Blue and Gold Banquet

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

My son, Colin, is a second year Webelos in Pack 640 of Holt. Troop
272 took his den, the Webelos 2 den of Pack 640, with us to the
Mawanjidiwin District Fall Camporee back in October, 2005. We had a
wonderful time with the Webelos Scouts from this den.

Yesterday, my family received an announcement from Pack 640 that they
will be having their annual Blue and Gold Banquet on Tuesday,
February 2, 2006 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Washington
Woods Middle School cafeteria at the corner of Washington Avenue and
Holt Road in Holt, just east of Holt High School. This Blue and Gold
Banquet will include a potluck supper, awards, raffle, and the
Webelos 2 crossing-over ceremony.

The Webelos 2 crossing-over ceremony recognizes Webelos Scouts who
have successfully completed their Cub Scouting career and are
planning to "cross-over to" (i.e. join) a Boy Scout troop.
I expect that representatives from Boy Scout troops to which any
Webelos 2 scout from Pack 640 has chosen to cross-over will be
invited to participate in the Webelos 2 crossing-over ceremony. As my
son Colin has chosen to cross over to our troop, I am hoping that
Troop 272 will be invited to attend this ceremony.

Troop 272 has not yet been invited to this event. But please keep
this event in mind.

Mr. Walsh and I are scheduled to give a presentation about Troop
272's Scouting Program to the Webelos 2 den of Pack 640 this evening.
Perhaps, we will learn more about the Blue and Gold Banquet this
evening.

I will keep you informed of any further news which I receive about this event.

Bertha Brock outing cancelled

I just received final confirmation from Troop 33 that the Bertha
Brock outing has been cancelled.

Their scoutmaster, Jim Kleiver, found out that there is absolutely no
snow left on the hill.

Perhaps the outing would have been cancelled anyhow, even if two of
the attending troops had not already cancelled their participation in
this outing, on account of lack of two deep leadership.

Cancellation of Bertha Brock

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

This weekend's outing to Bertha Brock has been cancelled.

The Boy Scouts of America require a "unit" (e.g. a troop), to submit a "Local Tour Permit Application".

"This application must be filed with the local council service center two weeks in advance of scheduled activity for proper clearance."

This set the deadline for the Bertha Brock Outing at Friday, December 23, 2006.

As of today, Troop 272 still does not have several items of information required to fill out this application. In particular, we do not yet have complete information regarding two-deep leadership, vehicles, drivers, and passengers.

Early this morning, Troop 33 informed me that one of the participating troops has cancelled their participation in this outing. This troop was unable to obtain the required two-deep leadership. Troop 33 wanted to know whether we were still going to come on this outing and, if so, how many Scouts would be coming.

At this point, Troop 272 still did not have the necessary two-deep leadership and information required to file the Local Tour Permit Application for this outing. Even if we had this, our application might not be approved at this late date. So I just felt that I had to tell Troop 33 that we were not prepared to go on this outing. I did not feel that I could keep Troop 33 waiting any longer for us to finally get this outing together.

I am sorry that this happened. Perhaps we can all think about what we might be able to do to prevent it from happening in the future.

Bertha Brock Adult Leadership

Hello, all!

We are once again in need of adult leadership for the Bertha Brock
Sledding Outing scheduled for Jan. 6-8, 2006. A conflict with the
Chief Okemos Council pizza party for those who sold $1,000+ worth of
popcorn in the Fall Popcorn Sale makes it impossible for Joe and
Aaron Walsh to stay for the entire weekend. (Congratulations, Aaron
and Joe!)

Because this outing involves several other troops who are willing to
have our five boys attend with only one adult, we will not
necessarily need another adult to chaperone with Mel Butler. However,
we do need to provide:

1) transportation to the park Friday evening
2) support for the boys in the preparation of Saturday evening's meal
(our assignment for the outing)
3) transportation home from the park Sunday morning

If you can provide any of these items, please contact me immediately.
I need to file a trip permit application with the council and need to
have the transportation concerns addressed by tomorrow (actually I
needed them addressed a week ago, but I am hoping for grace). I need
to have the driver's licence number and birthday (including year),
together with the vehicle's owner, make, year and model with
insurance levels and number of seat belts for any driver and vehicle
transporting another family's child.

Another option will be to have the boys assemble at the park (i.e.
each family will drive their own scout to the park on Friday and pick
them up at the park on Sunday). The ability of the boys to provide
Saturday's dinner with only one adult to assist will need to be
discussed with the boys and Mr. Butler, if there is not another adult
able and willing to help.

this past year. In any case, I have been informed that it will be

The Patrol Leaders Council will be meeting tomorrow evening.

One of the items on their agenda tomorrow evening will be the Bertha
Brock Outing scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 6-8, 2006.

So far we do not have the required two-deep leadership to conduct
this outing. Assistant Scoutmaster Joe Walsh has agreed to attend
this outing. This gives us the required registered adult leader. But
we do not have a commitment yet from a second adult, who is either a
registered adult leader or a parent of one of our Scouts attending
this outing. Until we have this second adult, we have not met the
requirements of the Boy Scouts of America for conducting this outing.

Neither I, Assistant Scoutmaster Gary Cunningham, or Pastor Owens,
the pastor of our chartering organization, Olivet Baptist Church,
will be attending this outing.

I have not yet heard from all the adults associated with our troop,
registered adult leaders and parents of our scouts, concerning
whether they can help us out with meeting this two-deep leadership
requirement.

It would be very helpful if I could know by tomorrow evening's
meeting whether we will have the required two-deep leadership for

2005 Quality Unit Award

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

Congratulations to Troop 272 for earning the 2005 Quality Unit Award.

This award is given to units (troops, packs, venture crews, ....) who conduct an appropriate program for their unit including various items which are viewed by the Boy Scouts of America as either essential or strongly recommended for such a program.

We had more than enough aspects in our program this past year to qualify us for this award.

There were four required items for this award and six additional items from which to choose. To earn the award a unit's program must have included the four required items and two of the additional six items.

Troop 272 had all four required items and four of the additional six items.

The two additional items which we missed were :

8. Boys' Life - A subscription to Boys' Life will go into the homes of all our Boy Scout members, or we will have a 10 percent increase over a year ago.

10. Patrol Method - We will conduct Troop Junior Leader Training as outlined in the Scoutmaster Handbook and hold monthly patrol leaders' council meetings.

While we conducted monthly patrol leaders' council meetings, we did not conduct Troop Junior Leader Training.

Next year, I think that we should be able to get item 10 as well as the other items which we got this past year. We will continue to have monthly patrol leaders council meeting. So we just need to make sure that we conduct Junior Leader Training.

We may also be able to get item 8 if we can increase the number of our Scouts who have subscriptions to Boys' Life magazine. Presently, two of our six Scouts are receiving this magazine in their homes. One more of our Scouts subscribing to this magazine would give us an increase of well over ten percent.

I encourage us as a troop to work towards getting all ten items next year. I think that all of these items are quite reasonable for a good troop to achieve, although not all are essential for a good program.

Popcorn Money Due

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

Troop 272 must pay the Chief Okemos Council for popcorn sold in the
Fall Popcorn Sale no later than December 16, about one week from
today.

Presently, less than one-fourth of the total value of the popcorn
sold by our scouts in this sale has been turned into our troop. Since
we sold a fair amount of popcorn in this sale and have a fairly
modest troop account, our troop account is far short of what we need
to pay our debt to the Chief Okemos Council.

Please turn in the total value of the popcorn which you sold in this
sale no later than next Tuesday evening, December 13. It would be
helpful if you could turn this in earlier than next Tuesday. If not,
please turn it in next Tuesday. Next Tuesday is the last troop
meeting before we have to pay off our debt to the Chief Okemos
Council.

Mawanjidiwin District Fall Camporee

The Mawanjidiwin District Fall Camporee was a great success.

The Scouts did a great job on Saturday's three meals. At each meal,
they served a guest who judged the meal according to several standards,
as part of a camporee wide competition for best breakfast, lunch, and
dinner, and
best overall meals.

Six Webelos Scouts from Den 4 of Pack 640 of Horizon Elementary School in Holt
joined our troop for this fun weekend accompanied by gorgeous Fall weather.

Open House

Gaelic Football, Boiled Potatoes, Orange, White and Green

At the PLC meeting it was decided that the game we will be conducting
will be Gaelic Football, we will be cooking a boiled dinner of
Potatoes, Cabbage (there was much complaining), and Corned Beef.
Scoutmaster McCarthy agreed to make a flag. Luckily, the Irish flag is
quite simple, three verticle strips of orange, white and green.

We got Ireland!

Mr. Rick Tod informed us that we have been assigned the country of Ireland for the spring Camporee. Now we just need to find a game and food of that country, and make a flag. More info on the Camporee can be found here.
